D.C. Kite Plan 2010

This simplified (diagrammatic) composition depicts two layouts for the core of our nation’s capitol: the 1901 McMillan Commission “kite” plan, against the current built environment, (green as open space, red as public buildings, and yellow as everything else).

Primarily during the 1920’s and 30’s, the kite plan was revised in terms of street, building and monument placement to “accommodate” a wide variety of influences. It’s informative to view what just 25 years of governess did to the much-heralded McMillan plan (scale: one thumbnail = 1 football field).
